History


The area that is now known as Orleans was originally inhabited by the Algonquin people. The first Europeans to explore the region were French fur traders, who arrived in the 17th century. The name "Orleans" was first used in the early 19th century in reference to the Duke of Orleans, the son of the French King Louis Philippe. The community was officially incorporated as a township in 1850 and was later amalgamated into the City of Ottawa in 2001.
